The Texas Food Truck Showdown returned to Waco on Saturday.
The annual event brought almost 40 food trucks and thousands of people from around Texas for a day of food competition.
“Waco puts on the best show in the state,” said Dallas food truck owner Thomas Behymer.
The day kicked off with a competition with celebrity judges. From the 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. it was the people’s turn; thousands bought tickets to sample different food trucks and vote on the KWTX website for the people’s choice of the showdown.
The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce organized the food battle. Director of communications Julina Macy hopes events like this keep bringing more money and development into the city.
“We have locally coming [a crowd of] 20,000 people,” said Macy. “It’s drawing attention to Waco, they’re staying in hotels if they’re coming from out of town.”
Organizers estimate they sold about 25,000 tickets for the competition. Residents like Petra Ashelman say they’re glad to see a revival of downtown.
“I’ve been in Waco for 22 years,” said Ashelman. “This is a huge event for Waco, probably one of the largest I’ve ever seen.”
The overall 2016 Texas Food Truck Champion was Chef Tai’s Mobile Bistro.
Holy Frijole took Best International Dish.
Most Unique went to The Great Australian Meatpie Company I.
Rockn Rollerz Rolln Grill won Best Between Bun.
The Dream Kitchen won Best Dessert.
Local truck Billy Bob’s Burgers took the crown for the people’s choice.
